Leading Man Pending

Note the third word. Everything turns on it.

"Pending" isn't a claim — it's a status. It's the language of applications, permits, and decisions you're waiting on. And it says three things at once:

You applied. Nothing goes pending unless you submitted something. That already puts you ahead of most people, who never sent anything in.

It's undecided. Still open. Nobody's said no.

Somebody else is deciding. Which is either an honest description of how most careers work, or slightly bleak, depending on what kind of week you're having.

It's the confident version of not having made it

There's a difference between I haven't made it and I'm pending.

One is a verdict. The other is a status update on something still in motion. Same facts, completely different posture — and the second one is more accurate for almost everybody who would wear this.

You're not the leading man. You're also not out. The application is in.

It's a tank top, and that's the joke completing itself

This is a garment you wear while you're working on it. The gym, the summer, the day off, the thing you do before the thing.

Nobody wears a tank to the meeting. It's the in-progress version of a shirt, which makes it exactly the right format for a sentence about being in progress.

The tank

100% combed ring-spun cotton at 5.5 oz/yd² — mid-to-heavyweight, soft-washed, tight-knit. That's a substantial tank rather than a thin one you can see through, and the soft-wash finish means it arrives broken-in instead of stiff.

Relaxed fit with a sleeveless drop arm — the armhole sits lower, so it doesn't cut across the shoulder and it moves properly when you do.

Thirteen colorways, including a few you won't find in most catalogs: Coral, Squash, Mint, Pacific Blue, Harbor Blue, Military Green, alongside Black, White, Navy, Red, Team Royal, Charcoal Heather and Athletic Heather.

Two fabric notes: Athletic Heather runs 85% cotton / 15% viscose, and Charcoal Heather is 60% polyester / 40% cotton. Both feel slightly different from the 100% cotton colorways — lighter, with more drape. The other eleven are pure cotton.

Sizes S–3XL. $29.99.

Who it's for

Actors, obviously — the phrase is theirs, and "pending" is a word they live inside.

But also anyone waiting on a decision that isn't theirs to make. Applicants, candidates, anyone with something submitted. People between the work and the result.

Gym people, since this is where the phrase is most at home on a garment.

Anyone who finds Main Character a bit much but isn't ready to concede either.

And anyone with a good sense of humor about their own trajectory.

As a gift

Works as encouragement without being a motivational poster — it's a joke that happens to be supportive.

  • For a friend in the middle of trying something

  • Actors, performers, and anyone auditioning for anything

  • Graduation, where "pending" is a fairly precise description

  • For someone who just applied for something big

  • Birthdays for anyone with more ambition than results so far

  • Summer and gym gifts

Safe for almost anyone, because the joke is self-deprecating and hopeful at the same time.

The other two positions

We make this argument three times, from three angles:

Are You The Lead in the Movie You are experiencing? → — the question.

MAIN CHARACTER → — the claim.

Leading Man Pending — the honest middle.

Frequently asked questions

What does it say? Three lines: "Leading / Man / Pending."

What does "pending" mean here? It's a status rather than a claim. You've applied, it hasn't been decided, and someone else is deciding. It's the confident version of not having made it yet.

Is it about acting? It comes from that world, and actors will read it fastest. But it works for anyone waiting on a decision they don't control — applications, interviews, submissions, anything with a gatekeeper.

Is it related to your other hats? Yes. Are You The Lead in the Movie You are experiencing? asks the question, MAIN CHARACTER makes the claim, and this one sits in the middle: applied, undecided, still in it.

Why a tank top? Because it's what you wear while you're working on something rather than when you've arrived. The in-progress version of a shirt.

How heavy is the fabric? 5.5 oz/yd² — mid to heavyweight. It's a substantial tank, not a thin one, and it's soft-washed so it arrives broken-in.

Do all the colors feel the same? Almost. Eleven of the thirteen are 100% cotton. Athletic Heather has viscose in it and Charcoal Heather is a poly-cotton blend — both slightly lighter with more drape.

Will it fit me? Relaxed fit, S–3XL, with a sleeveless drop arm so the armhole sits lower and doesn't cut across the shoulder. If the size is wrong we'll swap it — unworn and unwashed within 30 days, you cover return shipping and we cover the replacement.

How do I wash it? Cold wash inside out, tumble dry low or hang dry. Don't iron directly on the print.
